Birds are often found to be the victims of larger, more vicious predators. But when a bird is the predator itself, things can get pretty gruesome! Learning that a bird can eat other birds just may change your mind about these majestic animals. How does a shrike eat a bird? Have you seen the ruthless way a pelican eats? Stay tuned to find out because today we are looking at brutal moments of birds eating other birds!

Shrikes are often referred to as butcher birds. This is quite a graphic name, but once you see how they eat their prey, you’ll understand how they got it. When a shrike is ready to eat their prey, whether it be an insect, a small rodent, or even another bird, they will take it to a tree branch and find a place to impale it. Once the prey is impaled, they begin to devour it violently. Let’s take a look at this first clip. In it, you can see a great grey shrike enjoying a nice, fresh meal. This shrike sits atop a branch riddled with thorns. This is the perfect spot to eat, because as you can see, the shrike has a fitting spot to impale the bird it has just killed. While its prey is impaled, the shrike is free to tug at it and rip it apart without having to use its feet or worry about it moving too much. Look at how the shrike violently pulls at the dead bird’s feathers, attempting to reach the prey’s juicy insides. This may be a smart technique for eating smaller prey, but you gotta admit, it is absolutely horrifying!

Pelicans are rather odd looking birds. What makes them stick out is their bill. Pelicans have the largest bill of any other bird in the world. These bills can reach 45 centimeters, or about 18 inches, in length. In addition to its length, it also has a specialized pouch called a gular sac. This sac can hold up to 14 liters, or about 3 gallons, of water! This incredible bill helps them to catch otherwise difficult prey. Let’s take a look at this next clip. Here, we see a couple of curious-looking pelicans walking around. One of these pelicans is a bit more than curious. In fact, it appears to be a bit hungry. Luckily for this pelican, a few pigeons are hanging around nearby. The pelican walks right up to it and grabs it in its mouth! As the pelican walks around with the pigeon in its guar sac, you can see the pigeon, still alive, frantically attempting to escape. The pelican keeps its bill shut while it also tries to get the pigeon down its throat. It needs to readjust the pigeon. Head first is the best way to eat prey whole, but since the pigeon is still alive, this proves to be quite a difficult challenge. The pigeon nearly escapes a couple times. Feathers fly out of the pelican’s bill as it continues to shake. After an excruciating five minute battle, the pelican is finally able to down this stubborn pigeon!

Herons may not look the part, but these tall birds are excellent hunters. They have extraordinary vision that allows them to hunt during both the night and the day. These birds look quite big, but they are surprisingly light, weighing in at only about 3 kilograms, or about 6 pounds. This is thanks to the fact that they have hollow bones. This makes the heron quite agile, since they don’t need two carry around so much body weight. Now let’s take a look at this clip. This heron has a live duckling dangling from its beak. The duckling is being held up by just its tiny head. The heron holds it still for a while. After some time passes, the heron begins to toss the duckling into its mouth more securely, all while the duckling still struggles to get free. The heron is able to get the duckling’s entire head into its beak, but it holds it there for a moment. This heron really is trying to savor its meal! Then, in an instant, the heron tosses its head back and the duckling slips right down its throat, disappearing in a second! An entire duckling gone that fast, now that feels like magic!
