A healthy diet is essential for your dog; dogs are your best friends and companions.

Dog owners usually feed their dogs a variety of healthy foods, such as commercial canned, packaged, and homemade foods.

While some homemade food can be harmful and may be toxic for your dog, you must be very careful when choosing a diet for your dog.

which foods are harmful to dogs

Humans’ and dogs’ metabolisms vary, which is why certain human food items might not be safe for your dog. Some human foods are known to be dangerous for dogs, but many other foods are also dangerous. Let’s have a look at the list of hazardous food items:

XYLITOL

According to a prominent dog-walking company in San Francisco, CA, “A compound product known as an artificial sweetener is commonly used to make toothpaste, bakery items, and candies. This xylitol is highly dangerous for dogs, and consumption of it can cause hypoglycemia and dysfunction of the liver.”

Symptoms of xylitol toxicity in dogs:

  • Difficulty or loss of coordination
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Liver failure

AVOCADOS

Avocados contain a compound called persin, which is toxic for dogs and can dangerously affect the dog’s health. An increased intake of avocados may cause severe diarrhea or constant vomiting. So it’s essential to keep your dog away from avocados.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is dangerous not only for dogs but also for humans. It damages the liver and is harmful to the brain in a similar way as it affects humans. We all know that dogs’ internal organs are more sensitive than ours, so they are more susceptible to the side effects of alcohol consumption.

Side effects of alcohol consumption:

  • Diarrhea
  • Breathing problem
  • Coma
  • Death.

ONIONS AND GARLIC

One of the most dangerous and alarming conditions is that the consumption of onions and garlic causes severe destruction of red blood cells in dogs. This results in anemic conditions. So you better keep your dog away from onions and garlic.

Signs of onion and garlic toxicity include:

  • Vomiting
  • Breathing issues
  • Weakness

CAFFEINE

Caffeine, chocolate, cocoa, and energy drinks are dangerous for your dog’s health. Keep your pet away from these products.

If your dog has consumed any of these things, you should seek help from a veterinarian.

GRAPES AND RAISINS

These grapes and raisins are not healthy choices for your dogs because consumption of very slight or few items may make your dog vomit, and prolonged consumption will cause kidney failure.

MACADAMIA NUTS

Macadamia nuts and products that contain them are not good choices for your dog as they can negatively affect his health.

Symptoms of macadamia nuts toxicity are:

  • On and off fever
  • Weakness in the leg
  • Upset gastrointestinal tract
  • Muscular problem

CAT FOOD

Cat food might look very appealing to give to dogs, and keeping it away from your dogs is challenging, but cat food is not suitable for dogs. Cat food is different from dogs’ food, and their primary difference is because of their food content. As cats are carnivores, their diet includes meat, animal protein, and fats only. On the other hand, dogs are omnivores, meaning they derive their nutritional needs from both animals and plants.

Cat food is another example of nutrient-rich food that poses no harm. Some vets refer to cat food for dogs suffering weight loss or those with a loss of appetite. However, it should be aware that dogs with certain underlying conditions can find cat food harmful; this condition includes kidney problems, liver disease, obesity, or gastrointestinal disease.

CONCLUSION

We all share our food with our dogs without proper research; although many human food items are safe, some human foods can dangerously affect your dog’s health.
