Hook – Gull roost

A substantial (for here) gull roost formed at the mouth of Sprinkle Pill in the fading light of yesterday afternoon. Dominated by Black-headed Gulls (734), with 4 Mediterranean, 4 Common, 36 Lesser Black-backed, 3 Greater Black-backed and 12 Herring Gulls.

Good numbers of waders and waterfowl also, with 105 Shelducks, 2 Pintails (males), 3 Shovelers, 5 Great Crested Grebes, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Grey Plovers standing out amongst the commoner birds. A passing raptor put everything up (with the exception of the Grebes, Curlews and Grey Plovers). On this occasion the culprit was not the expected Peregrine but a smallish Sparrowhawk.
