Stackpole and Tenby – yesterday

From Gareth Jenkins – After several wet`n`windy days a dry day was forecast so I drove to my county of birth and spent the day at Stackpole, walking around the lakes. Birds seen : Cormorant,Grey Heron, Mute Swan,Teal, Mallard, Goosander (2 redheads), Buzzard, Pheasant, Water Rail, Moorhen, Coot, Herring Gull, Black headed Gull, Wood Pigeon, Kingfisher (7 sightings of at least 3 different birds,1 from the road bridge leading to Stackpole Court, 1 flying south of the 8 arch bridge and the other sightings of one flying back and for across the lake, viewed from the bird hide), Gt Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Wren, Robin, Black Redstart (male, flycatching from the roof of Stackpole Court tower from 16.15 to 17.15hours, watched from the grassy area), Blackbird, Song Thrush, Long tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Nuthatch, Jay, Jackdaw, Rook, Carrion Crow, Starling, House Sparrow, Chaffinch, Brambling (1 male with Chaffinches, feeding in trees around the court), Greenfinch. Other sightings ; Otter, my attention was drawn to this by the cob Swan hissing and adopting threatening behaviour as one swam close to the pen and cygnet. Fox, 1 male walking the lake side. Both Otter and Fox were seen whilst I was in the bird hide. Ubiquitous Grey Squirrels. Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell around growths of Ivy. And in Tenby at mid-day whilst having a bacon roll and coffee, a Hummingbird Hawk moth was nectaring on the flowers opposite WH Smith`s. Now that I wasn`t expecting to see on 4 November !
