Newport and Goodwick this afternoon

BH1_5428

Taking advantage of the fine sunny weather, this afternoon we made a trip up north to the Nevern estuary and to Goodwick. We noted a couple of Mediterranean Gulls resting on the water with 100+ Black-headed and 20+ Common Gulls and numerous Herring Gulls etc. It is possible that the Ring-billed Gull was present in a more distant mixed flock of bathing gulls but, even with a telescope, it was too far away to be absolutely certain, and we could never get closer views.

A birder asked us if we had seen a 1CY Caspian Gull. Apparently one had been photographed by someone here earlier (today we assume). Unfortunately the only young large gulls we saw were typical Herring and Great Black-backed, so presumably it had moved off before we arrived. We wonder if there were any other reported sightings?

A kingfisher landed in the ivy-clad shrubbery above the Iron Bridge and eventually we had reasonable views of the Water Pipit as it fed along the edge of the grassy marsh zone.

Later, at Goodwick, we noted 13 Med Gulls (4 adults and 9 1CY birds) resting and bathing with Black-headed and Common Gulls off the Flagpoles. None came ashore when we were there, so it was not possible to confirm if any were ringed. A kingfisher flew in to rest, or to fish from a spot on the rocky shore, close to where we have occasionally seen them before.

Single Red-throated and Great Northern Divers were feeding inside the harbour, fairly close to the outer breakwater. They were always too far away from our location at the opposite end of the harbour for good views.
